A painted thrift store frame and printable can make a perfect, thoughtful gift for a friend.

Recently a dear and sweet friend of mine went through a very personal hard time. She was out of town and away from home for over two weeks. Knowing how much she missed her family and home, friends created welcome baskets with meals, flowers and groceries. As part of my basket addition I created this painted thrift store frame and printable.

After a quick trip to my local thrift store I found this frame:

The condition was great and it is made of wood, but can we talk about the trim color? Definitely too bright and fluorescent. This needed to be tamed down ASAP!

The Price is Right

Can you believe that this frame was only .25 cents? Me either! After I got the frame home I realized that the glass insert was glued down and not removable. This might be why the price was so low.

Admittedly I had to do more prep work before I could paint the frame.

  • Using painters tape I carefully taped off the glass as close to the frame as possible.
  • Using a 1 inch angled brush, I painted 2 coats of Amy Howard One Step Paint in Bauhaus Buff
  • Let dry completely
  • Add paper rose. Tutorial HERE.
  • Carefully remove painters tape
  • Add printable to frame

It’s no secret to anyone that knows me – I am a huge fan of Laura Ingalls Wilder and Little House on the Prairie. I have most of the vintage books written by Laura and I have the collection of the Little House series DVD’s. Whenever I see an old episode, Pa can still make me cry.

“Home is the nicest word there is” just felt appropriate as a welcome-home greeting.

We all know that feeling of missing home and the sense of comfort the moment we step inside the front door. That’s how I’m sure my friend felt when she returned home. Hopefully she was further comforted by the welcome baskets and this painted thrift store frame and printable.
