We are always looking for creative ways to display family pictures in our homes. Here’s a chalk painted silver tray photo frame.

Trust me, I know some of my ideas seem off the wall. Being a creative person, it feels like my mind never shuts off. I am always reimagining, rethinking, refiguring, redoing everything in my head a hundred different ways. It’s how I just knew that this was going to be a chalk painted silver tray photo frame the moment that I spotted it.

Keep a Watchful Eye

When I go thrift shopping, I keep an eye out for silver trays. They look great in home decor vignettes or just stacked in a group together. Typically I never pay more than $3 for a large silver tray.

This particular tray is approximately 8 inches square and I fell in love with the ornate edges. As you can see it has a lot of damage and wear.  The tray has rust and deep pit marks on both sides.

Being that the tray was marked for only .10 cents there was no risk in the purchase. With my creative mind whirring I knew immediately that I was going to paint it and turn it a photo display frame. Look at that trim! I knew that it would be gorgeous painted.

  •  2 coats of Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Old White letting some of the original silver show through on the outer trim
  • hot glue a 57mm bulldog clip
  • hot glue a vintage inspired piece on top of bulldog clip

After everything had dried completely I was ready to display a photo, artwork or quote.

This is a beautiful spring wreath quote that we created last year. You can get that HERE.

I had all of these materials on-hand, so this project only cost me .10 cents for the tray!

Doesn’t this look beautiful paired with the maidenhair fern?

The chalk painted silver tray photo frame looks really beautiful when displayed with this antique family photograph. It will really be fun changing out photos and quotes over time.

This is another silver tray that we painted with chalkboard paint . You can read that post HERE or click the photo.

Be sure to look for silver trays when you go to the thrift stores. You can do so many things with them and they are so inexpensive. How do you use them in your home decor?

  5. I just love this idea, and I love the square tray. I haven’t seen one of those before, but I will be on the lookout, for sure! I’ve painted trays with a chrome metallic paint, but the effect here with white chalk paint is so much softer. Love it!

I love picking up silver trays from Goodwill. there are so many and with great patina. Some i just wipe clean and stack in my booth and some that have alot of damage, i chalk paint and add a transfer from Re-design with Prima or IOD. I would love to try an stamp them. Thank your for the inspiration! Pinned!
