This No Wake Zone Sign idea was a project that I have been wanting to do for a really long time. Even before we moved into this house as our permanent home.

But as you know sometimes no matter how good of an idea we have or how much we want things to happen, they get put on the back burner. Life gets in the way, we get busy with more important matters or we just simply don’t have the time.

Do y’all remember back in the spring when our friends Scott and Darlene gave me some wire spools? I made a Plant Stand and a great Coffee Table for the front porch.Well, this No Wake Zone Sign was made from the other end of the wire spool from the coffee table.

Materials:

Steps:

  • Painted one light coat of Old White chalk paint on the entire spool base and edges.
  • Let dry completely.
  • Painted cobalt blue craft paint ring in the center trim.
  • With bright red craft paint, hand painted NO WAKE ZONE
  • Let dry completely.
  • Use 220 grit sand paper and lightly distress paint for a weathered look.
  • Removed dust.
  • Use a lint-free clean cloth and apply clear wax to entire surface of painted spool top.
  • Use a very small amount of dark wax on painted blue area.
  • Add the D-rings with the screws to the back of the spool.

Here you can see how I use an angled brush for letter painting.

Some of you might think I’m a little crazy for even thinking of putting sandpaper on this pristine and freshly painted sign.

Distressing gives the appearance of being outside for a period of time. I want it to look like it had been out on the lake for many, many years.

Just a little light sanding does the trick.

Afterward, add a light coat of clear paste wax to the entire piece for protection. I added dark wax to the blue ring to knock down the brightness of the blue.

This cute sign will now greet our guests in our guest bedroom. Hopefully they will appreciate my humor and attention to detail. I really do wish that they get a great nights’ sleep in the new No Wake Zone.

Heavy Hanging

The trickiest part of this project was in the hanging of the sign. The spool weighs a whopping 39 pounds as it is made of wood. I added two D-rings to the back of the spool and added two anchors and screws to the wall. After careful calculating, measuring and doing a lot of math I am very proud to say all of my measurements were correct. Only two holes in the wall 🙂

We want our guests rested – not knocked out LOL.

Hopefully on Friday I will be ready to share the guest bedroom makeover with you!

Until then we have other posts to share. See you tomorrow!
