Wire Spool Table Plant Stand – Zero Dollar DIY Challenge.
We participate in the bi-monthly Zero Dollar DIY Challenge. Every other month our group individually creates projects that cost no new money. What? That’s right – we will each roam our garages, closets, basements, etc. to find an item that we meant to reimagine, but just never got around to doing anything with it. Lord knows we each have tons of these items in our homes. This month we have created a wire spool table plant stand.
This months post honors Earth Day which is April 22nd. We were each challenged to repurpose an item in our homes from something that normally would be discarded or destroyed as trash.
A giant thank you to our friends Darlene and Scott. This fabulously fun couple graced us with several construction wooden wire spools. Look for other projects involving these spools in the near future!
This small wire spool was the perfect candidate to become a rolling plant stand by the front door.
Usually these types of spools are destroyed on construction sites and tossed as trash. Other times they become part of a burn pile. Either way, these are not very Earth-friendly solutions. We are so happy to be given the chance to turn this spool into something useful and pretty to grace the front door.
The wooden rounds were sanded with 220 grit sandpaper taking special care to get rid of marker writings.
These old casters were in our stash from another project. Three of them were added to the bottom.
Wanting an aged look to our piece, we chose Weathered Gray stain by Varathane and added one good coat.
Isn’t this paint color by Amy Howard gorgeous?! And how cute is the name – Tick Tock?
We let everything dry for 24 hours. This outdoor poly is perfect for the table as it will be open to the elements of the weather.
We feel like this turned out perfectly. A super cute greeting to visitors and guests.
Being that the casters were added, this table can be wheeled around to the garden hose for plant watering or to the patio to become a side table.
We have a lot of ideas for the other wire spools! More importantly we had a fab time working side-by-side on this project! Don’t forget to check out all of the other creative posts below!
If you missed the last Zero Dollar DIY Challenge you can see that HERE.
To continue the Earth Day inspiration, be sure to check out our fellow participants in this month’s There for the Making challenge. Each of them created a beautiful project without spending any money, and all of them have something to do with repurposing – perfect for Earth Day!

It turned out beautifully! And what a smart idea to put it on wheels so that you can rotate it for maximum sun exposure. Fabulous.
So smart with the casters on the bottom too, I love this as an outdoor piece!
Oh I LOVE your castors, they are actually my favourite ones! haha, I’m the weirdo that has favourite castors, yes. They just make this planter so versatile. It looks wonderful ladies, great job!
You have great friends! Wood spools! Love what you did with this one!!!
Nice work ladies.
This is so clever, how perfect for spring and summer!
This is so much fun ladies! I love how you took something that wasn’t even related to plants and made it amazing! Super cute as always! Hugs, CoCo
Love how you turned those dirty construction spools into beautiful, functional patio furniture. Can’t wait for the patio party! 🍺🍹🍸🍷
