Laundry Closet Makeover – needed stat!

We have lived in our house for a little over 2 years and if you can believe it, during these past couple of years we have not had a washer and dryer.  I know, a lot of you are asking how we lived without it for so long?  We’re not sure how we did it either haha!

In the beginning

When we first saw our house we fell in love with it!  It was exactly what we were looking for and pretty much ticked all of the boxes on our list.  We knew that the washer/dryer connection location was not ideal…it was in the crawl space, which is definitely a little dingy and at times scary.  It is also not incredibly convenient as we have to walk outside and down a hill to get to the crawl space, then duck your head to get inside and proceed to stand on a dirt floor.  Laundry is already not my idea of a fun time and add the crawl space element in, not so much!  You get the picture…but here is what it looks like to give you a better visual. This is why we need a laundry closet makeover!

Crawl Space

Yeah, so that was not going to be the place we did our laundry.  In our old house in North Carolina we were able to easily add a washer & dryer to one of the closets without any problems, so we assumed that would be the case with our new house.  Our master bedroom has 2 good sized closets, so we thought one of those would be the perfect spot.  After about 4 people came to take a look at it, we soon realized that our plan was not feasible, which was frustrating to say the least.

Re-thinking the plan

We then thought about adding it to another closet in the house.  But as you know, in an old home the closets are smaller and we would have to build out one of the existing closets.  This of course took more money than we wanted to spend.  So for the past 2 years we’ve been doing laundry at the laundromat or at my parent’s house…talk about feeling like I was back in college again.

We finally said “enough is enough” and bit the bullet and decided to build out the closet in our study.  We were tired of spending so much time doing laundry and honestly it just didn’t feel 100% like our home.  So we hired a crew and they got to work!

Here is the closet we decided to use…

I just loved coming home each day and seeing the progress made!

Don’t you love the tile they used?  It really matches the wood floors well!

Stay tuned until next Monday when I will be revealing how the finished product looks…we couldn’t be happier with the outcome and are thrilled to finally be able to do laundry at home! Laundry closet makeover part 1.

  1. That is going to be so great for you when it’s done! My laundry area is in the basement, and even though our basement is finished, it still really stinks having to carry all that up and down two flights of stairs. I’m jealous! 🙂

We are so excited about it Kristen! For a moment we thought we could finish the crawl space a little bit and do laundry down there, but that thought was short lived. Can’t wait to reveal how it turned out!

  2. I wonder who on earth thought it would be a good idea to put the laundry hookup in the crawl space?! (Must’ve been a man! LOL) Anyway, I’m sure you’re happy to be getting this project checked off your list — can’t wait to see the end result!

Haha! I agree Erin…definitely not the best place to do laundry. We are so happy to have this one checked off…thanks for checking in 🙂
