Can you believe it is already Wednesday. Maybe it’s just me, but I feel like time is moving at warp speed and I am struggling to keep up. Before we know it Thanksgiving will be here and then the Christmas season will be upon us. We don’t decorate our homes until the day after Thanksgiving, but we do begin to make gifts and food ahead of time to be better prepared for the season.
Todays recipe is a combination of food and gift – but this food isn’t for you to eat. It’s a food treat for our feathered friends. It’s also a perfect hostess gift, a gift for a bird watcher or nature lover or – well, it’s a gift for just about anybody.
Fall and Winter are times when food in nature is not as plentiful for wild birds. You can help them out by putting out birdseed or in this case you can make birdseed cakes.
I chose this cookie cutter tree pattern that I already had on hand. I feel that it perfectly represents Christmas and nature.
Begin pressing the seed mixture into the mold…
…add the straw to create a hole for later hanging.
I had enough seed to make 3 molds…
After 4 hours I removed the molds from the refrigerator. The seed was dry and hardened. They were easy to remove and gently pressed loose from the mold.
I then cut pieces of jute to thread through the holes to create a hanging loop.
I really love this tree shape…perfect for Christmas gift giving 🙂
This project was so easy and fun to do. I think this would also be a great way to get your children involved in gift making this holiday season. We hope you decide to give this project a try…and let us know what you think 🙂
