Can you believe it is already Wednesday. Maybe it’s just me, but I feel like time is moving at warp speed and I am struggling to keep up. Before we know it Thanksgiving will be here and then the Christmas season will be upon us.  We don’t decorate our homes until the day after Thanksgiving, but we do begin to make gifts and food ahead of time to be better prepared for the season.

Todays recipe is a combination of food and gift – but this food isn’t for you to eat. It’s a food treat for our feathered friends. It’s also a perfect hostess gift, a gift for a bird watcher or nature lover or – well, it’s a gift for just about anybody.

Fall and Winter are times when food in nature is not as plentiful for wild birds. You can help them out by putting out birdseed or in this case you can make birdseed cakes.

DIY Birdseed Cakes…

This recipe made three molds.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups dry bird seed
  • 1/3 cup boiling water
  • 2 TBS cold water
  • 1 packet of gelatin
  • cookie cutters or mold
  • cooking spray
  • jute
  • drinking straw

Instructions

Boil 1/3 cup water.

In a mixing bowl add gelatin and 2 TBS of cold water - stirring together.

Add boiling water and stir until gelatin is completely dissolved.

Add 2 cups of bird seed and stir until seeds are completely coated in gelatin mixture.

Spray your cookie cutters with cooking spray.

Spoon seed mixture into mold, packing tightly. Keep adding seeds and packing down.

Insert a drinking straw to create a hole into the mixture for further hanging.

Place mold and seed mixture into refrigerator for four hours.

Remove from refrigerator and gently press the seed mixture out of mold.

Remove straw.

Cut jute and thread through hold and tie with a tight knot.

You can now add this to a tree or bush outside. If giving this as a gift wrap it in a cellophane bag.

  1. I’m always impressed by what you create!

  2. OMG once again your creativity astounds me. I always wondered how people made these and it looks so easy. LOVE it and will probably make a batch for us too. Have a great day, Lisa

Hi just wondering how much is in a packet of gelatin?

  4. I did make these using your receipe, however, they just became too soft and “melted” out of the little box cage thingy put them in. Does gelatine go bad?
