Don’t we all like free things? Here are 8 easy free fall decorating ideas to get you in the mood for the season!
Jenn and I received an email with a request that warmed our hearts and reminded us exactly why we love writing this blog. A sweet reader wrote to let us know that she too is crazy for fall just like we are. YAY! We are so glad you are one of our people 🙂 Our reader is on a very limited budget, but wants her home to start reflecting her favorite season.
I put on my thinking cap and came up with some great ideas. Obviously we aren’t pulling out the gourds and jack-o-lanterns just yet. I know that I don’t necessarily go out and purchase new fall decor every year. Sometimes my favorite things are items that didn’t cost me one bit of money. Of course as the season progresses I will add more layers of texture like throws and pillows. The pumpkins and gourds will finally make their entrance by the end of September, but until then these are the free fall decorating ideas I use in my home.
Chalkboard Graphics
This is a chalkboard painted thrifted silver tray that I made several years ago. Adding a graphic is an easy way to instantly introduce fall. After polling several friends I discovered that most of them have a chalkboard or two at home. If you don’t have a chalkboard, consider using a piece of black paper instead.
This is a farmhouse style easel chalkboard that I made last year for the fall front porch. You could create any greeting that you like.
Paper Feather Garland
As you can see feathers are a big deal in my home and in my decor, not necessarily just for fall. This paper feather garland was created just for fall last year and it was a big hit with our readers. You can get the pattern for the feathers HERE.
Group Color Glass
Jenn and I each have a love for vintage glass. The color glass doesn’t even need to be vintage. Just collect the color glass in a grouping to display. You might be surprised to see the impact just 3 of the same color bottles or jars displayed together can make.
Sticks as Art
Sticks are my friends 🙂 In my home they are currently displayed in my dining room on the sideboard in this blue and white ginger jar.
They look great in jars or vases too. Sticks add height and texture to a room.
Display Pinecones
Pinecones are another great freebie from nature. Make sure that you take care to rid your pinecones of any possible critters. I bake mine in a 250 degree oven for 30 minutes…just in case. Let cool completely before handling.
Then I display them throughout my home in fall and winter. They look great in baskets and bowls.
Free Printable

Last year I made this free printable. Feel free to print this out for your home. It look best on thick card stock.
Items Found in Nature
These are the kind of things that make my heart go pitter patter. Yes, the feathers repeat often in my house. Consider using these items in a display under a cloche or in a wooden bowl.
Candles are always a good idea
These made it in the free decor idea because I think everyone has candles in their homes. Candles look great in grouping.
Try and use scented candles in your favorite fragrance of the season. For me amber and vanilla scream FALL!
Don’t forget to add this to your favorite Pinterest board.
My sincere wish is that this list helps you get ready for my favorite season. Maybe you now have a few free ideas to help you go through your house or your neighborhood this weekend to collect some things. Maybe you and a friend or family member could get together and do a swap! I would love to hear back from you and hear your ideas.
Have a wonderful weekend!
