DIY Vintage Wooden Spool Decor

Before I discuss this DIY vintage wooden spool project, can we talk about our weather for just a second? I know that some of you think that Jenn and I are crazy for loving cold weather and snow, but we do. All week long the weather reports and meteorologists touted details of all of the snowfall in the Atlanta area. Jenn and I were in a frenzy of excitement as the experts promised “record snowfall”, “Snowmageddon Part 2”, and “snowpocolypse” conditions. Well…we woke up to a big disappointment on Saturday. Our area only had a mild dusting of snow. I still embraced the moment with piping hot cup of coffee, sitting in my favorite chair perched next to the window as I watched the tiny flakes fall. Mother Nature is a beautiful thing!

Now – back to why you are here :)

Several weeks ago Jenn and I were shopping at one of our fave local shops, The Beehive. We love everything about this local shop and what they represent – not just their cute name :) Luckily for us they were having a giant warehouse sale that day. There were bins, boxes and shelves full of sale merchandise to dig through. Happily, we discovered these bags of wooden spools.

Jenn and I each grabbed a bag of six spools. We love that the spools are wooden and have a vintage finish. With this $2.50 price tag we knew that we couldn’t go wrong with this purchase. The staff weren’t sure what these spools were originally used for, possibly strings of beads.

At the time we had no idea what we would use them for, we just knew that we couldn’t leave them behind. See what we mean by vintage finish?

Since all of my Christmas decor has been stored away, I have been working on creating Winter decor.

I wrapped each spool with creamy white yarn, string and twine.

They look beautiful displayed in this apothecary jar.

Recently, I saw similar spools in a specialty shop with a high dollar price.

Creating my own vintage spools was very inexpensive. The yarn and twine are from leftover projects and in my craft stash.

Winters can sometimes look stark and dreary. I love to incorporate greenery and white in my Winter decor each year. These mini boxwood wreaths are adorable. They add color and cheer to the entry table.

I will be sharing more of my Winter home over the next couple of weeks.

My hope is that you are inspired to create vintage decor in your own home. You can see how Jenn used her spools HERE.
