Welcome to the 2018 Ornament Exchange. I have created a pretty watercolor Christmas ornament from a napkin.

This is our third year participating in the blogger ornament exchange! A group of bloggers are paired up and we swap important key information about each other – such as our Christmas decor likes and dislikes.Based on this information, we create handmade ornaments for each other and mail them off in an exchange. That’s why this year I created a watercolor Christmas ornament from a napkin. Let me tell you all about it!

My sweet ornament partner is Evija of From Evija With Love. She is very talented and creative. An extra added feature is she lives in the Isle of Man in the UK but is originally from Latvia Evija describes her Christmas decor as traditional, white, silver and blue. Be still my heart! I could see why we were paired up! Immediately I began thinking of ideas. I headed to my craft stash and found these craft board ornaments:

When I purchased them at the Dollar Tree in September, I had no idea what I was even going to do with them. Truth be told, I still wasn’t very sure of what I was going to do.

Time to Get Creative

Searching for inspiration I visited the craft store, but I wasn’t having any luck. Back at home in my pantry I spotted these napkins that I had previously purchased at the dollar store.

I was suddenly struck with an idea. Why not paint the lavender parts of the napkin with blue watercolor paints? If my plan worked, I could then try and Mod Podge the painted paper to the cardboard forms. Sounds crazy, I know.

  • cardboard form ornaments
  • paper napkins
  • watercolor paints
  • water
  • paper towels for blotting
  • scissors to cut napkins into 2 inch squares
  • Mod Podge
  • sponge brush

How To

  1. Peel apart napkin down to single ply – top layer. Discard bottom layers.

2. Choose your color palette. I used only two blue colors.

3. Paint the napkin. Let dry completely.

4. Paint cardboard ornament with generous layer of Mod Podge and start adding napkin pieces. Smooth out bubbles, taking care not to rip paper. Keep adding pieces until all of the cardboard is covered. Let dry completely.

Personally, I thought that these turned out beautifully. The paint did not adhere to the silver.

It retained its luster.

Hopefully Evija will think that a Watercolor Christmas Ornament From a Napkin fits into her home decor. I truly hope so.

They were so much fun to create and they were a labor of love!

I can’t wait to see what she created for me!
