Hey y’all…welcome to our Master Bedroom Closet – One Room Challenge (Week 2), which we can’t believe is already here! We’ve made some progress with creating a master bedroom closet, but there is still a lot to be done. As we shared with you last weekwe were tired of the makeshift closet we had created on the room off the master bedroom and felt it was time to create a real master bedroom closet. Pulling together different ideas, we created the mood board below to help us design a space we’re going to love.

If you have forgotten what we were working with, here is the before photo with our rolling racks, out of date carpet, and clutter…

We got everything cleared out of the space and then got to work with pulling the carpet up. When we lifted that first corner we were really hoping for some hardwoods, but of course we couldn’t be that lucky.

Using a pry bar, we pulled up all of the tack strips, which was kind of fun. What was not fun was taking all of the staples out of the floor.

The previous owners had used bondo or something similar on part of the floor, so we had to sand this down as best as we could.

Then came the fun part of figuring out what to put down for flooring. Our original thought was doing interlocking hardwood floors, which we thought would be easy enough for us to do. But then when we realized that there would be some tricky edges we would have to figure out, as well as the overall cost, we started looking at other options. We are really trying to work with a strict budget and didn’t want to blow it all on flooring. So, on one of our many visits to the Home Depot, we found a ream of vinyl flooring that looks like wood and is a lot cheaper! The best part is that they will cut how much you need, which makes things so much easier.

We still had to make some cuts, but this is much easier than getting out the saw and cutting pieces of wood. All we needed to use was a heavy duty exact knife.

Ta-da! Here is the flooring laid down and we think it looks great if we do say so ourselves.

To us you cannot tell that it’s vinyl and really fits the look we are going for perfectly. Now don’t get us wrong, it wasn’t the easiest thing to install, but it took about 2 hours to do and that was just with one person doing it. It definitely beats putting down hardwood floors, which would have taken us some time to do.

We’re thrilled with the progress we’ve made, but we still have a long way to go. This weekend we will definitely be weekend warriors to get a lot more done off of our checklist. Also, be sure to visit Calling it Home to see tons of other One Room Challenge projects for more inspiration. Until next week!

XO – Jenn & Vicki

  1. You guys that floor looks just like planked wood! So cool! I’m excited about the direction this space is headed. I know it’s going to be amazing. Hugs, Coco PS I hope you soaked in the magically tubby after sanding the floors and pulling up the tacks/staples. My back hurts just looking at that

    1. We must admit that we are amazed at how closely it looks compared to a plank floor. It even has a textured feel similar to wood. We hope that we can pull this off over the next few weeks!

  2. I love the flooring. Did you have to glue the back to your subfloor? I was thinking this might be great for my craft room.

    1. Hi Ann – Yes…we used a double-sided tape meant for vinyl flooring. Very inexpensive, This flooring would be ideal for a craft room, easy clean up.
