DIY Succulent Terrarium

I love succulents and I have been wanting to create my own DIY succulent terrarium for a while now.  I have been patiently waiting for a plethora of succulents to finally arrive at the Home Depot…and by patiently waiting I mean I’ve been stalking the store. I went in a few weeks ago thinking they would have succulents, but to my disappointment, they did not.  The person I spoke with said they would get them in soon, but of course did not have an exact time of when this “soon” would be.

This past weekend I decided to call the garden department so that I didn’t seem like the crazy lady coming into Home Depot yet again asking if the succulents had arrived.  The sweet woman on the other line said that they had just gotten a large shipment in of succulents and that it was a “good batch”.  I was in the car in record time to get over to the store.  When I walked in, I could not contain my excitement when I saw this sea of succulents…they had finally arrived!

Succulents are some of my favorite plants.  I love them so much that my wedding bouquet was made entirely of succulents.  But up until now I did not have any in my home.  I don’t have much of a green thumb and was afraid that I would kill them, even though they are fairly resilient plants.  However, seeing this item in a local thrift store that was marked down to $10 had me change my tune.

I knew that this would make the perfect DIY succulent terrarium and I just couldn’t pass it up.  It already had that rustic farmhouse charm I love so much and I didn’t need to do a thing to the mini greenhouse as I started calling it.

Then I had to start thinking about how I wanted the succulents to be displayed.  I knew that I could use moss on the bottom, which the roots of the succulents could grab onto.  And I already had sheet moss on hand in my little craft stash.

Then I set out all of the succulents I bought…

I put down the sheet moss and then added a little bit of soil and then started to place the succulents where I thought they would do best.  To hide any exposed soil, I cut sections of the sheet moss to go on top and then hid the patchwork of moss with reindeer moss.  This also helped to give it more texture.  And y’all, I LOVE how this turned out!  This is honestly one of my favorite things I’ve ever done.

It goes perfect on my coffee table, which gets a decent amount of sunlight and is a larger space that needs to be filled.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

To water them, I will just use a water bottle to spritz them and, fingers crossed, they survive.  I’m hoping these succulents will be the key to turning my black thumb to a green thumb.

If you want to create your own terrarium, all you need is:

• Sheet Moss
• Reindeer Moss
• Soil
• Glass structure or even a shallow wood box (just be careful when watering)
• Succulents – the most important part

This DIY succulent terrarium adds a little joy to my living room and it was so easy to put together. And the best part is that they really are low maintenance. If you’re on the fence about creating your own terrarium, you should definitely give it a try…I know it will turn out great!
