Wooden Crate Makeover

Please tell me that I’m not the only one that procrastinates. I have been wanting to do a wooden crate makeover for quite some time now. Like, since January! One day I happened to be in my big box hardware store when I heard the proverbial beep…beep…beep of the warning signal of a forklift backing up. The driver was unloading a palette full of unfinished wooden crates. But, these weren’t just any crates – they were damaged and they were marked for $5.00 each! I dug through the stacks of wooden crates until I found three of them that didn’t seem to have any damage at all. I promptly came home and stored them in my garage and forgot about them until now. (This post contains affiliate links.)

Here is what I started with. Nothing wrong with this look in its raw form, I just wanted a more rustic finish.

I gathered my materials and headed out to my front patio.

Here is how to do it…

1. Raw wood – unfinished crate.
2. Use a small hammer to knick.
3. Mar the outside of the crate for an aged finish.
4. Use one coat of Weathered Gray Stain on the outside and inside of the crate. Let it dry for one hour.
5. Add one coat of dark wax to the outside of the crate.
6. stand back and admire the finish 🙂

I finally found mums at my local garden shop. This large beauty fit perfectly inside the crate.

You will be seeing more of this crate in my outdoor Fall decor.

For now I made this cute wooden tag…Mum’s the Word!

 

This wooden crate makeover was super easy. The hardest part was having the patience for the stain to dry.

I can’t wait to display some pumpkins and gourds as the Fall season progresses. This would also be cute inside the house to store magazines or throws. What would you use this crate for?
