I don’t know about you, but I love when I get a good deal…especially when it’s free!  On a recent walk in my neighborhood I came across these wooden balusters that were being thrown out (I guess it does pay to exercise).

They were pretty dirty, but I saw their potential.

I knew I didn’t want to paint them, but instead just clean them up and keep them looking shabby chic.

First thing I did was take a dry paper towel and get off any loose dirt.

I used a dry paper towel to get the loose dirt off the baluster

I then decided that I would use clorox spray to get off more of the dirt.  I wasn’t quite sure how this would work, so I tried it on one at first.  This way if I somehow ruined it, I would still have another one.

I then decided to use clorox bleach to get more of the dirt off

And luckily for me it worked!

First I sprayed the baluster and let it sit for about 5 minutes.

I let the clorox sit on the baluster for about 5 minutes

Then I brought it to the kitchen sink and used a wet paper towel to gently wipe off some of the dirt.

After I let the clorox sit, I used a wet cloth to work on getting the dirt off the baluster

I then followed this by rinsing the baluster off.

After using the wet paper towel I washed off the baluster and let them dry

I decided that these would look great on my mantle as candle holders and would bring some character with the crackling and worn look.

I guess I need to keep my walking up so I can find my next trash to treasure!
