It’s that time of year when I want my house to smell like pumpkin spice and everything nice! I thought that I would share how to make DIY scented pinecones.

Spicy fragrances of cinnamon, clove, ginger and anise instantly transport me to warm fuzzy memories of my mother. During the fall and holidays she always baked and whipped up the most delicious treats. One of my earliest memories as a child was coming home from school and being greeted at the front door with the sweet smell of freshly baked snickerdoodle cookies. Their heavenly cinnamon fragrance is still one of my most favorite. Now, I can’t bake everyday or I would be the size of a mountain 🙂 To replicate the cozy fragrance of Fall I am going to share with you how to make DIY scented pinecones.

This way the spicy fragrance will greet you every time you enter your front door.

Take a Hike

Hopefully your neighborhood is plentiful with pinecones. When you are out on your next walk, be sure to take a bag with you and pick up at least 12 to 20 good sized pinecones. You might like to collect some extra pinecones so that you can try out our tutorial on how to bleach pinecones.

After your Walk

It may not seem like it, but little bugs and mites can be hiding in your collected pinecones.  When you get home you should bake them in the oven to be sure that you aren’t bringing any critters into the house.

  • Preheat oven to 200°
  • Line an old baking sheet with aluminum foil
  • Place pinecones on baking sheet
  • Bake pinecones for 30 minutes
  • Remove from oven and let cool completely

Instructions:

  • In a gallon-sized zip-locked baggie add pinecones.
  • Add essential oils of your choice. I used 15 drops cinnamon, 10 drops clove and 5 drops orange.
  • Seal the bag and then remove the excess air.
  • Shake and roll the baggie so that the oils soak into the pinecones.
  • Leave the bag in a cool dark place for at least one week. The longer you can leave the bag sealed the better your pinecones will be scented.

After the pinecones are scented, they are ready to be displayed.

This wooden mango bowl is one of my favorites – don’t I say that about all of my wooden bowls? LOL

For a bit of color I tucked in a piece of greenery from a pine tree that broke away on a windy day.

It is fragrant too.

Now my house smells perfectly Fall – warm and cozy.

Even though I miss my mother, I am glad that I have many warm memories to replicate the feelings of our loving home. I hope you like this tutorial on How to Make DIY Scented Pinecones.  It is super easy and you can use any other oils that you like that remind you of Fall!
