Homemade Orange Cleaners

Hey y’all…have you noticed how expensive home cleaning products are nowadays? What about reading the labels of your fave products? Lots of the ingredients are chemicals or things I can’t even pronounce. I’ve been trying to educate myself on the safest products to use in my home, but goodness there are so many conflicting reports. My interest was piqued about home cleaning products when Honey Bee gifted me with a mini essential oil kit. I was not familiar with these oils and was curious as to what they could be used for. I was excited that these oils can be used in a multitude of ways…including making cleaning products.

One of the oils in my pack is “Wild Orange” and it smells fantastic! Coincidentally one of my favorite store-bought natural cleaners that I use on a regular basis is fragrant orange…but it is very expensive! I narrowed down my search for how to create homemade orange cleaners and this is what I came up with.

Tip

You can recycle a glass bottle from your very own pantry. The bottle that I used started out as a marinade. I removed the label with Goo Gone and washed it in the dishwasher. The spray nozzle is recycled from and empty cleaning bottle and fits perfectly on the bottle.

This is the essential oil I used.

Now…here’s where the fun begins. In my research I found out that vodka is an excellent cleaner. it disinfects and dries quickly. There is no need to purchase expensive vodka. I found this bottle for $4.99.

Orange All-Purpose Cleaner

In this 23 ounce bottle I mixed an equal measurement of vodka and distilled water. I then added 30 drops of the orange essential oil. You can reduce the amounts according to your bottle size.

Vigorously shake the bottle before you spray. It smells wonderful and it cleans really well.

I made custom labels for the bottle fronts.

Orange Citrus Room Freshener and Linen Spray

I discovered that the same mixture can be used as room freshener and linen spray. I used smaller bottles and placed them in each of the bedrooms in the house. It feels so good to put my head on my pillow at night and inhale the fabulous orange citrus fragrance!

I used a leftover spray bottle to create the room freshener.

Refrigerator Deodorizer

I’m going old-school on this one. As a young girl I grew up in South Florida where fresh citrus was plentiful. My grandmother taught me this helpful tip. Cut an orange in half and remove (eat) the fruit. Pour salt to the rim of the orange, and place it in the back of the fridge. The salt soaks up the natural oils in the orange flesh. It keeps the fridge smelling nice and clean. Change it out after 3-4 weeks.

You can use other essential oils to create your own fragrant cleaners. Lavender, peppermint, lemon and more. I am not an expert but did my homework and this combination works great for me and my home. I hope you give it a try!
