Fragrant Fall Simmer Pot

There’s nothing like filling your home with the scent of the season. Today I’m sharing my fragrant fall simmer pot.

For as long as I can remember I have always simmered things on the stove top to make my house smell warm and inviting. This was even way before it was “a thing”. Simmer pots are also a great way to banish funky odors and keep moisture in the air during the fall and winter months. A fragrant fall simmer pot is so easy to do, I’m almost positive you have the makings in your pantry right now.

I’m surprised and dare say a little shocked that there are stores and companies that sell expensive, pre-packaged potpourri simmering sachets. There is no need for that at all. Ingredients are inexpensive and very easy to do. Also feel free to substitute the ingredients to what you have on hand. I will give you some suggestions later.

My favorite simmer pot recipe

  • One apple, cut up
  • One grapefruit, cut up
  • 3-4 cinnamon sticks
  • 1-2 tablespoons whole cloves
  • 1 tablespoon pure vanilla
  • 1 gallon of water
  • Add all of the above ingredients to a large pot. Bring water to a boil and boil for 2 minutes. Reduce heat to low and let simmer all day. Check water level throughout the day and add more water as needed.
  • You may refrigerate the pot every night, and simmer the pot each day. The ingredients will keep for approximately 6 days.

 

Once you boil and simmer your pot the ingredients do become muddled and murky.

Not to worry though because they smell amazing.

This spicy fall fragrance permeates the entire house. Honey Bee is always disappointed as he thinks I’m baking an apple pie!

Initially this post came about because I was making this for my home anyway. I had made a delicious spicy chicken soup, but felt that the smell was stagnant in the house.

Fresh apples, cloves and cinnamon is a much better fragrance!

Variations and substitutions

  • instead of grapefruit – use oranges, lemons or limes
  • instead of vanilla – use almond extract
  • instead of cinnamon and cloves – use star anise or pumpkin spice
  • if you don’t have fresh apples – maybe you have apple cider, apple juice, cranberry juice or orange juice.

  2. Did I miss something? Above I saw bleaching pine cones and simmer pots, but nothing on scented pine cones.
