Do y’all eat a lot of salad? I know that’s a crazy questions to start a conversation, but do you? Honey Bee and I do – pretty much every night with supper we have a garden salad. Fresh produce is becoming more plentiful as our weather warms, which means greens will be more readily available!
I like to try making a variety of salad dressings and vinaigrettes. I’m not a big fan of store bought dressings. I find them to be too sweet, too salty and too sour. FreshĀ vinaigrettes are simple to make, less expensive than store-bought and you can change them up to your liking – a little more of this, a little less of that.
I always start with olive oil and Modena balsamic vinegar. Here’s a tipā¦this vinegar can be very pricey. I purchase mine at HomeGoods and TJ Maxx! Both stores have a great gourmet section and i buy it whenever they have it.
The basic recipe is delicious too!
For variations and add-ins to this basic recipe: Dijon mustard - just 2/3 of a tsp makes a tasty french vinaigrette. Fresh chopped herbs like basil thyme or cilantro. For a bit of spice add red pepper flakes or a dollop of your fave hot sauce. Garlic and green onion make for a delicious savory vinegar (Our favorite)
Ingredients
- 1 part vinegar to 3 parts oil
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Yes, That's it!
- You can use white vinegar, red vinegar or balsamic vinegar.
- I prefer olive oil but you can also use vegetable oil or canola oil.
Instructions
For easier preparation and clean-up, add the above ingredients to a Mason jar. Shake the jar until the pile and vinegar have emulsified.

Crushed peppercorns are delicious in theĀ vinaigrette…
ā¦we prefer Italian Sea Salt. It’s lighter tasting than table salt.
ā¦adding the olive oil to the jar.
Ready to shake it up!
I tripled the recipe so that I can have extra during the week. This will keep in the refrigerator for one week.
This is so good – you will want to eat a salad every night!
I hope you feel inspired to make a different variety ofĀ vinaigrettes – remember they test better than the store-bought stuff and you are in control of the flavor. Let us know your winning combination!
I’ve never tried to make my own salad dressing before but you know what – I think I’ll start this weekend. You always introduce me to brands I’ve never heard of which always makes for an exciting to the store to find “the good stuff.” My salads may never be the same š Hugs, Coco
Hey CoCo – Thank you so much! Yes, we like to have a different flavor each night and tire of the same ol’, same ol’ salad dressing. The possibilities are endless!
I never thought of looking at TJ Maxx for food!! Lady, you’re just so shopping savvy! That’s a great tip. We love balsamic vinegar and olive oil for a bread dip and, yes, we go through a lot of it. I’m going to have to start making a mason jar full of it! Thanks for the recipe!! Hugs to you both!
Angie – you can always count on us to lead you to the great deals. TJ Maxx has a wonderful gourmet foods section – we like to buy things that are a bit different and they don’t cost a lot of money!
Vicki, this looks delish and I too have never made my own and if only I knew how easy it was….lol. Thank you so much for sharing and can’t wait to make it. xo Lisa
Girl…you need to try to make your own – it tastes so much better !
I am cooking impaired but this looks so easy even I can do it!
I much rather create a home made vinaigrette where I will know the materials used first hand.
Great recipe, thanks! š
You are so funny š I promise you, that yes, you can make this with no problem!
