DIY Tray From a Repurposed Cabinet Door

Creating a DIY tray from a repurposed cabinet door makes for beautiful home decor.

When making wooden DIY projects, lumber can sometimes be pricey. A great alternative can be your local Habitat Restore, thrift store or salvage yard.  On a recent thrift store hunt I scored not one, but two cabinet doors for 50% off of $3.59. So each cabinet door cost me roughly .89 cents each. Not only is the price right, there is no need to create a mess or drag out any heavy duty saws to cut the wood. The doors are sized perfectly and ready-made to craft trays, signs, tabletops and more.

How to make a tray from a cabinet door

Step-by-step guide:

1. Sand, then  thoroughly clean cabinet door.
2. Paint one coat of chalk paint. I used Anne Sloan Aubusson Blue. After it is dry to the touch, paint another coat.
3. Print off a graphic of your choice on your home computer.
4. Using a piece of chalk, carefully outline each detail of the graphic.
5. Press the graphic, chalk-side down onto the painted cabinet. Be careful not to smear as you press the chalk design. Lift the paper off of the cupboard.
6. Using a chalk paint accent color, begin painting your design. I chose Paris Grey.
7. Once you are happy with the completed design apply bees wax to the entire painted cupboard and buff. You may use clear wax as well.
8. Apply a little bit of dark wax for an aged look. Buff and blend well.
9. Add handles on each end of the board.

Aubusson Blue is one of my most favorite of Anne Sloan’s chalk paint colors. Depending on the sunlight, the hue changes throughout the day. The wax application changes the color as well.

The relief design on the cupboard was also a perfect place to add the accent paint as well.
