So, I went to the hardware store for paint and came home with parts to make a DIY galvanized cake stand.

Does that ever happen to you? You go into the store for one thing and come home with something completely different? That’s how I ended up with pieces to create a DIY galvanized cake stand, from the hardware store no less.

First of all, I think I should tell you that I have been in love with hardware stores for as long as I can remember. As a little girl when I was growing up in south Florida, our local store was Ed’s Hardware Store. I remember tagging along with my dad and playing in the bins of nails, bolts and bits. The fresh smell of sawdust was the first thing that struck me when I entered the door. Maybe that’s part of my beginning’s of DIY curiosity. For me it is so much fun to walk the aisles and look at different pieces and see how they might go together and how I could use them in my home.

Hardware store love

Even though I know exactly where the paint is in our hardware store I began cruising up and down the aisles. An employee soon asked me if he could help me find what I was looking for. When I said  “No, thank you, I’m just looking for inspiration” his eyes got as big as saucers. He said that was the first time he’d ever heard that LOL. A few minutes later he noticed these two pieces in my hand:

“So, you’re making repairs to your chimney?” This would be a normal assumption as these pieces are from the chimney parts aisle. But, I had to burst his bubble and proudly reply “No sir, I’m making a cake stand!” I wish that y’all could have been there to see the look of utter shock and dismay on his face. He sputtered and his face turned red. He even said something about “That’s the craziest thing I’ve ever heard.”

Female’s unite

Thankfully a female employee stuck her head around the corner, because she overheard our conversation and was curious. Explaining my idea she got excited and very animated. She wanted a play-by-play of how I was going to complete the entire cake stand. The male employee just shook his head and walked away LOL.

I know I get some hair-brained ideas sometimes, but something just clicked when I spotted those chimney parts. We’ve all seen the pretty farmhouse galvanized cake stands and tiered stands. Sometimes they come with a hefty price tag. My pieces cost me a whopping total of $5.oo.

I added a little bit of dark wax to the outside of each piece to make them look a bit more aged. Believe it or not, the inside of the top piece is food safe so I kept it clean without wax.

To attach the two pieces together I used my trusty clear Gorilla Glue.

You know that I have a collection of cloche’s in various sizes. Luckily I found one that fit perfectly for the top.

An 8-9 inch cake will fit perfectly. Or a dozen mini cupcakes!

This could be cottage, farmhouse or industrial style.

So take a trip to you local hardware store aisle. You never know what you will discover!
