This DIY Wood Bead Garland is so easy to make!

Welcome to the latest edition of Thrifty Style Team. This month I easily created a DIY wood bead garland. Even better, the entire project only cost me $1.00!!!

A big thank you to our friend Julie of Redhead Can Decorate for hosting this monthly hop!  This is the place where we get together with our talented and creative blogger friends every month. We each makeover, repurpose or transform something from our homes or the thrift store.

Thrifting on Vacation

As I have previously stated, I love to visit thrift and antique stores when I am out of town. My local area doesn’t have a lot to offer, so it is exciting to see what other cities have. When I visit my BFF, Bambi, in Florida we always make what we refer to as the pilgrimage. We make a point of visiting many stores and I have always found the best stuff for even better prices!

Do you remember Jenn’s painted dining room set? Previously I shared my most recent blue and white thrifted finds. During last months Florida thrifting I discovered this tub of wood beads for just $1.00! This was a fabulous deal. I knew immediately that I wanted to make another wood bead garland.

A couple of years ago I made THIS wood bead garland with tassels. It immediately sold in my antique booth. Ever since then I wanted to make one for my home.

This is how you do it

Supplies Needed:

  • Wooden beads. I made an extra long one using approximately 75 – 20mm beadsLike these or these.
  • Cotton cording or jute. Be sure the thickness is small enough to fit through the bead
  • Scotch tape
  • Scissors
  • Pencil

Tutorial:

  1. Gather supplies
  2. Do NOT cut the cording. This keeps the beads intact and you don’t mistakenly cut the cording too short.
  3. Using Scotch Tape – tape of the end of the cording to prevent unravelling.
  4. Begin threading the beads onto the cording, until you are happy with the length.
  5. Make 2 tassels as shown below.

How to Make Tassels:

1.Wrap the cotton cording around the palm of your hand about 25 times.

When you are happy with the thickness of the tassels, insert a pencil or pen under the top of your loops. This way you can easily keep track of the top of the tassel.  Cut a piece of cotton cording approximately 24″ long. Tie it around the top of the  tassel approximately a 1/4″  from the top – and under the pencil.

Knot and wrap this piece around the tassel and then knot off the ends. Cut the bottom loop ends to create the tassel.

Thread each garland end with a tassel and knot it tightly into place.

It’s Organic

A wood bead garland adds such an organic feel to a room or vignette.

My previous garland was a tad short for my personal taste. That’s why I made this one extra-long. It wraps around this pretty blue glass bottle several times.

Plus, I know that this garland will get moved around to decorate other things like my wooden dough bowl.

Another bonus is that this just took me about 30 minutes to make. It doesn’t get any easier than that!
