Skinny Margarita
TGIF friends! Are you looking forward to the weekend as much as I am? Honestly I think I say that every week. The difference today is that by the time y’all read this I will hopefully be on a sunny Florida beach, reading a good book and sipping a special bev. Honey Bee and I are mixing a bit of business and pleasure for an extended weekend stay. Hopefully I will have lots of pics to share here on the blog and on Instagram!
Also, Happy Cinco de Mayo! Do you plan to celebrate tonight? I know that this holiday doesn’t have a lot of significance here in the States. Not to diminish the importance of this commemorative Mexican date, but I honestly think beer vendors started pushing this holiday back in the 1980’s as a way to push more sales…and 30+ years later, it obviously worked! We love to partake at our fave Mexican restaurant and celebrate with a pitcher of margaritas.
What makes it skinny?
I thought it would be fun to share with you my personal favorite skinny margarita recipe. One of the first questions people ask is “What makes it skinny”? Very valid question. For me it is the comparison of my classic margarita recipe ingredients to the ingredients of this skinny margarita.
The classic margarita has:
- 1/2 ounce more of tequila. Extra calories.
- Addition of 2 ounces of orange flavored liqueur. Extra calories and extra sugar.
- Addition of superfine sugar. More calories and extra sugar.
Also, if you use a pre-mix they can be very high in calories.
Here’s my tried and true version of the Skinny Margarita:
Ingredients
- Juice of 1/2 of a Medium Orange
- Juice of 1 Large Lime
- 1 1/2 ounces Silver Tequila
- 1/2 teaspoon of Light Agave Nectar (add more if you prefer a sweeter drink)
- Coarse Kosher Salt
- Lime Wedge
- Ice
Instructions
Rim the glass. On a small plate pour a 1/4 inch layer of coarse kosher salt. Rub the rim of a cocktail glass with a lime wedge - make sure it is moistened well but not dripping. Dip the glass rim onto the salt layer making sure the rim is covered in salt. Pick up the glass and lightly tap away loosened salt to avoid it going inside the cocktail glass. Fill the glass with ice and set aside.
Fill a small cocktail shaker with additional ice. Add the orange juice, lime juice, tequila and agave. Close the lid tightly. Shake vigorously for 30 seconds. Strain and pour into the rimmed cocktail glass.
Garnish with a lime wedge.
Enjoy!

This is a perfect cocktail anytime of year.
Fresh-squeezed orange juice and lime juice makes such a difference in the taste. You control the sweetness with the agave nectar.
I get asked all of the time about my bee glassware. Sadly this French glass is no longer carried where I purchased it years ago. Although I didn’t pay near this price I did find the Napoleonic Bee Glassware HERE if you are interested. In the meantime I will keep looking for another source.
Whether you’re celebrating Cinco de Mayo or just enjoying sitting on the front porch with friends – I think y’all will really love this skinny margarita. I would love to hear what your favorite cocktails are – beach drinks, porch cocktails, special bevs! Cheers to a fabulous weekend!
