Make your home cozy and inviting with our DIY cinnamon scented pine cones.

Spicy fragrances of cinnamon, clove, ginger and anise instantly transport me to warm fuzzy memories of my mother. During the fall and holidays she always baked and whipped up the most delicious treats. One of my earliest memories as a child was coming home from school and being greeted at the front door with the sweet smell of freshly baked snickerdoodle cookies. Their heavenly cinnamon fragrance is still one of my most favorite. Now, I can’t bake everyday or I would be the size of a mountain 😃 To replicate this cozy fragrance, I am going to share with you how to make DIY cinnamon scented pine cones.

You control the fragrance

We have all been inside stores and smelled the cinnamon scented pine cones. At first you think – wow this smells great. Then after awhile, the fragrance is overpowering and cloying. By making your own scented pine cones, you control how much cinnamon you want. A little bit goes a long way.

Pine cones are an inexpensive way to decorate seasonally. Arranged in a basket or vase by the front door, they invoke the seasons and holidays without putting out the hardcore Christmas decorations before a flake of snow has been forecast. Increase the warm and cozy factor this year with DIY cinnamon scented pine cones.

What is the difference in cinnamon oil and cinnamon extract?

Cinnamon oil is the pure oil from the cinnamon bark. Cinnamon extract is that oil mixed with alcohol and probably a few other things. The oil is more concentrated and also more expensive. The extract is usually used in cooking.

Take a Hike

Hopefully your neighborhood is plentiful with pinecones. When you are out on your next walk, be sure to take a bag with you and pick up at least 12 to 20 good sized pinecones. You might like to collect some extra pinecones so that you can try out our tutorial on how to bleach pinecones.

After your Walk

It may not seem like it, but little bugs and mites can be hiding in your collected pinecones.  When you get home you should bake them in the oven to be sure that you aren’t bringing any critters into the house.

  • Preheat oven to 200°
  • Line an old baking sheet with aluminum foil
  • Place pinecones on baking sheet
  • Bake pinecones for 45 minutes
  • Remove from oven and let cool completely

Instructions:

  • In a gallon-sized zip-locked baggie add pinecones.
  • In a small spray bottle, add 1/2 cup warm water.
  • Next, add 20 drops cinnamon essential oil.
  • Seal the bag and then remove the excess air.
  • Shake and roll the baggie so that the oils soak into the pinecones.

After the pinecones are scented, they are ready to be displayed. The more spray used, the stronger the scent will be. Especially when displayed in small spaces, a little can go a long way. Remember – a little bit of cinnamon goes a long way. After a week or so, check your pine cones for fragrance. If you feel like you need more, simply re-spray them with your water/cinnamon bottle.

How to Display Cinnamon Scented Pine Cones

Place a few cinnamon scented pine cones in a basket in the foyer or corner of the living room. Add scented pine cones to wood bowls or other favorite container to place on a tabletop. Use them in holiday displays or pass along to friends to share the spirit of the season.
