1905 Salad…Columbia Restaurant, St. Augustine, Florida

Last Thursday I wrote about one of my favorite cities to visit…St. Augustine, Florida .  I also mentioned my favorite restaurant, Columbia Restaurant.  We make sure to eat here each time we visit St. Augustine.  When I said that sometimes it’s more than one visit – I wasn’t kidding 🙂  We have also visited their other restaurant locations in Florida – love it!

This family restaurant has been in business for more than 100 years in their original location – Ybor City of Tampa, Florida.  Isn’t that remarkable?  The Columbia Restaurant, located in the historic district of Ybor City,  is Florida’s oldest restaurant and has received many awards of distinction.  The Columbia Restaurant has a rich family and cultural history.

Every time we eat here we always order the 1905 Salad.  The family freely shares their recipe on their website.  The salad and the dressing are infused with many layers of flavor – citrus, garlic, herbs and smokiness from the worcestershire sauce and ham.  This salad is one of the restaurants signature dishes and they make it for you at your table.

Just a few ingredients needed for the delicious dressing for the 1905 salad recipeThe recipe states that the dressing is best if made a day or two ahead, but I have frequently made the dressing right before serving, and it still tastes great. I also use canola oil if I don’t have olive oil on hand.

1905 Salad recipe

I love to use smoked ham.  To save time I purchase ham that has already been cubed – this is great if I’m tired and don’t feel like cooking 🙂  I add extra ham to the salad if we are eating it as our main meal.  You can also add turkey or shrimp to the 1905 Salad.  This will be great for all of the turkey leftovers that we will all have very soon 🙂

1905 Salad


  • 4 cups iceberg lettuce, broken into 1 1/2" × 1 1/2" pieces
  • 1 ripe tomato, cut into eighths
  • 1/2 cup baked ham, julienned or cubed (may substitute turkey or shrimp)
  • 1/2 cup Swiss cheese, julienned
  • 1/2 cup pimiento-stuffed green Spanish olives
  • 1/2 cup Romano cheese, grated
  • 2 tablespoons Lea & Perrins Worcestershire Sauce
  • 1 lemon
  • “1905” Dressing
  • Ingredients
  • 1/2 cup extra-virgin Spanish olive oil
  • 4 garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 teaspoons dried oregano
  • ? cup white wine vinegar
  • Salt and pepper to taste


Combine lettuce, tomato, ham, Swiss cheese, and olives in a large salad bowl. Before serving, add “1905” Dressing, Romano cheese, Worcestershire, and the juice of 1 lemon. Toss well and serve immediately. Makes 2 full salads or 4 side salads.

Salad Dressing Preparation

Mix olive oil, garlic, and oregano in a bowl with a wire whisk. Stir in vinegar, gradually beating to form an emulsion, and then season with salt and pepper. For best results, prepare 1 to 2 days in advance and refrigerate.

The lemon just enhances all of the other flavors.

A quick toss after you have added the cheese (parmesan in my case) worcestershire sauce and lemon.
