12 Easy DIY Red White and Blue Projects – DIY Housewives

It’s that time of year when we start thinking about Memorial Day and summertime activities. We’ve got you covered with 12 easy DIY red white and blue projects!

Our DIY series is back this month and our focus is everything red white and blue. Now that the weather is warmer our thoughts have turned towards getting ready for Memorial Day and 4th of July. We know that it might seem early to you, but we like to give you the creative ideas early so that you have time to make everything ahead and be prepared. Every Heart Beats True

First, take a look at our DIY wooden American flag. It was created from grade stake pickets from the big-box hardware store. This bundle cost less than $4.00 and we didn’t even use the entire pack.

For the sake of ease, the pickets were painted before they were glued together.

Paint stirrers were glued to the back to brace the pickets together. We used Gorilla Glue – but be careful. Gorilla Glue expands and puffs up, so a little bit goes a long way. You don’t want to ruin your wood project.

A palm sander was used to distress the painted wood for an antique-looking finish.

 

Using our home printer, we simply printed a star pattern and traced it with chalk.

We laid the star face-down on the blue painted square and rubbed the chalk outline.

This became our pattern line for painting a white star.

Feeling that the flag needed to look even more antiquated we added layers of dark wax.

Using MinWax dark paste wax we kept applying and rubbing the wax deeply into the paint and wood until we were satisfied with the look.

Then we buffed the top with MinWax clear paste wax.

We are very pleased with how this patriotic flag came together. Our proudest moment was when dad/grandpa exclaimed that he couldn’t believe that we “made it”. LOL
