Painted Kitchen Cabinets – Kitchen Makeover Week 2

The most dramatic change of the makeover is the painted kitchen cabinets.

Today we continue with the kitchen makeover week 2 and the painted kitchen cabinets. If you missed last week we shared our kitchen design and mood board. Admittedly the photos I am about to share are not stellar. They were taken on the fly as a favor to me by the painter with his cell phone as the kitchen cabinets were being prepped and painted. Everything was happening so quickly that there was no time to take proper photos.

Who Is Going to Paint?

Initially I was going to paint my kitchen cabinets myself. There are so many great tutorials and videos online to show you how to paint kitchen cabinets. Even more-so are suggestions for paints and paint finishes.  After much debate I opted to have my cabinets professionally painted. I realized that to achieve the finish that I wanted, with the amount of cabinetry that I have it was just too big of a job for me to do all by myself.

After receiving quotes from reputable painting contractors, I made a selection. Even Honey Bee was pleased with the great price quote. Luckily for me the painter and his team were able to start right away. On the first day they came to the house and removed the cabinet doors and drawers. Part of the team took those cabinets and drawers to their shop to begin painting them while the rest of the team remained at the house getting the kitchen prepped and ready for painting.

Be Prepared

As you can see, prep work is fairly involved. The prepping step should not be skimped on at all. I opted to have my cabinets spray painted. The contractor assured me that my home would be fully protected from all over-spray. There was no need for me to worry as the painters were meticulous in their preparation and in their work.

My paint choice color was Benjamin Moore’s White Dove. Upon the suggestion from the contractor we also added lacquer to the paint. The lacquer aided with the paint drying and extra hardening protection for the cabinets.  Also the lacquer gave the cabinets a very light sheen – but they are not shiny. When the cabinets were spray painted Honey Bee was out of town on a business trip and I stayed at a friends home. The lacquer can be overpowering.

White Dove is a very pretty barely off-white color. It looks great next to the Alabaster White walls. I didn’t want the whites too matchy-matchy. The cabinets had two coats of primer added followed by two coats coats of paint.

It’s hard to believe what they achieved in just two days time! We are thrilled with how the cabinets turned out. They look like they have a factory finish. Our friends and neighbors that have seen them can’t believe the difference and now they want their cabinets painted too!

I will be taking better photos as the makeover progresses. New cabinet hardware has already been added (I can’t wait to show you next week)  and just yesterday I made the final decision for the backsplash tile. Who knew that white carerra marble could look blue, green, brown or yellow? This has really been an educational process.

• Paint the kitchen cabinets

• Find an oversized shelf with antique corbels
• Add a new dining room chandelier to better enhance the kitchen
• New rug with light background color
• Move an existing table into the kitchen
• Use some existing decor and add new decor in neutral tones and touches of blue/aqua
• Pray everything goes to plan 🙂
