Happy New Year and our 2018 Word of the Year!

It feels so good to be back everyone! We truly hope that your holidays were magical and restful. As we ring in the new year of 2018 we are excited to plan, prepare and dream for the months ahead. Each year during our Christmas holiday break, our family discusses the upcoming year and what we would like to accomplish. Admittedly, we don’t really like to make resolutions but we do like to each choose a word of the year. So in this post we will each share our 2018 word of the year.

It’s a New Year

For us,  choosing a word of the year gives us focus and meaning. Typically it is a word that exemplifies an area of our life that needs improvement. We also want it to be a word that will serve as a reminder to challenge us throughout the year. We have shared past posts HERE and HERE.

Vicki’s Word of the Year

Last year presented me with some challenges. In March my dad fell and broke his femur. Our family was quickly educated on just how serious of an injury this was. Compounding the issue was the 2+ hour distance between my home and the hospital and his eventual rehab facility where he would be for three months. Then I had my own health issues to deal with during this time.

Inexplicably I was feeling sluggish and exhausted with no appetite. I attributed this to driving back and forth to the hospital visiting my father. Eventually I couldn’t ignore these warning signs. After visiting the doctor and much testing it was discovered that I have hypothyroidism. No problem – I take a tiny pill every morning before breakfast. Another issue that was discovered is an extremely low Vitamin D count. A normal count should be 30-100. Mine is a 2. And for some reason we can’t get this level to come up – no matter what we do. So this means that for right now it would be very difficult to fight off any type of infection or disease. All-in-all I feel great, and I do my best to eat right and stay healthy.

All of this is to say it became very evident to me that my life needs BALANCE.

BALANCE

Focus for 2018 will be creating balance in my life.

  • Doing a better job of saying “yes” when I really mean it and “no” when I really need to.
  • Being steady on my feet, firmly planted and standing my ground.
  • Time management

Jenn’s Word of the Year

This past year has been another busy one, and some of you may have noticed that I wasn’t as present this year with the blog as I’ve been in the past. I was finding it hard to manage my full time job, the blog, and my personal life. Needless to say, I was burnt out. But in not doing as much with the blog, I realized that I was letting my creative outlet go, which is such an important part of my life.

Because I do still work full time, and obviously my personal life is very important to me, I have recognized that if I want to be more committed to the blog for 2018, I need to HUSTLE. I’m a little mad at myself because I had set a big goal for myself with the blog for last year and I was not intentional at all. I promise you will see more of me this year…and I hope to give mom more of a break instead of her doing the majority of the work.

HUSTLE

Focus for 2018 will be sticking to my goals and hustling to make it happen.

  • Stop using “I’m tired” as an excuse.
  • Be more organized to stay ahead of deadlines.
  • And like mom, have better time management 🙂

Needless to say we are very excited about the year ahead. We look forward to new opportunities and adventures. Did you choose a 2018 word of the year? We would love for you to share it with us!

  1. Who does the terrific paintings. Do you sell them?

  2. Debra K Casebere says:

Loved this one! Thanks for sharing your words and your beautiful paintings! Just beautiful! My word is “Today “. You can do anything today. Just one day at a time. Be in the present today. This is the only one we have, so be here today. Thanks for your encouragement!

    1. Debra – this is absolutely a beautiful sentiment. Thank you so very much for sharing with us!

  3. I love both of these ladies! I know you guys are going to nail your goals this year too. I chose consistent because it felt like I was always on and off track 🙂 Big hugs and Happy New Year! CoCo

    1. Hey CoCo – Our 2017 wasn’t nearly as challenging as yours, yet we were still fairly scattered and exhausted. Our words truly resonated with as as we know your word of the year does with you. We know that no matter what, we are all more grounded for a better year! Much love in 2018!

  4. I love both your words and the reasons you chose them! And I’m so glad that 2017 gave us the opportunity to finally meet in person at Haven 🙂 I haven’t chosen a word for the year, but I do have a phrase that I want to use as my mantra – Remember Why You Started. I have a framed print on my nightstand and I’ve had it engraved on a bracelet so I can keep the reminder close by. I get so caught up in things I think I should be doing, that I lose sight of why I started out in the first place. Here’s hoping we all have a productive 2018!

    1. Emily – we are so glad to have finally met you in person too. Haven was so fabulous this year and you were a giant part of that!. We love your quote AND engraving it is a genius idea! Thanks for sharing your creativity and joy. Can’t wait to meet the newest member of the family very soon!
      Much love,
      Jenn and Vicki
