For me, and I’m sure for most, one of the most important things for my wedding is choosing the right photographer. This is a day you want to remember forever and having beautiful photos to look back on can only help 🙂 We recently chose our photographer and couldn’t be happier with our selection. And although part of our decision came down to personality, it also came down to the overall quality and look of the photographs.
We met with several photographers, trying to find the perfect fit. This is important to us and we wanted to make sure we got it right. Kara would laugh at me, but for each of our appointments I would take out my notepad with my questions. Here are the ones that I felt were the most important when speaking with potential photographers.
What is your style?
This was probably the most important question I asked and we typically got 2 responses. Either people who had a photojournalist style, which we prefer, or someone who really loves to do portraits.
What if we go over 8 hours?
Some photographers have a set time limit and you need to see if you’ll be charged additionally for any overages.
How long does it take to get images?
You want them to take time with your images, but you also don’t want it to take a lifetime.
Do you do your own editing?
Some photographers will have someone else edit their photos, so it’s important if they do this that you know it is someone they use all the time.
Do you primarily shoot weddings?
I’m sure most would agree that this is what you want them primarily to do for business.
How long have you been doing this?
I am all about people starting a new career path, but I also don’t want to be their first 🙂
How do you choose a 2nd shooter?
You want your photographer to choose someone that they trust and have worked with multiple times.
What happens if there is an emergency and you can’t make it to the wedding?
Hopefully this doesn’t happen, but it’s always good to know the plan b.
Have you ever had images not turn out?
This is rare, but it does happen. You want to make sure that your photographer has updated memory cards and chargers.
Do you have insurance?
Any professional photographer should have this…but hopefully you won’t need to use it!
I know for us, our photographer answered all of our questions with ease and confidence, which made us trust her. When we had narrowed it down to two photographers, I sent both of their images to my friend Rochelle who has an amazing eye for this kind of thing. She offered great insight into both, which helped us to make our final decision.
And although the wedding is still several months away, I cannot wait to see what the final images will look like 🙂
