A thrifted find becomes a treasure. A silver tray chalkboard.

We have all seen these silver trays in the thrift stores. Right? They are typically priced in my area for about $1 to $3 each. For some reason I am drawn to them like a moth to a flame. I love that each one is so different and unique than the next.

Markings, edges and engravings are so beautiful and intricate. Sadly, no one really has a use for these types of silver serving trays anymore as most of us opt for more casual homes. I do use a few for coffee table styling trays or as jewelry trays. They really are so pretty and practical.

Welcome to another monthly installment of our Thrifty Style Team. I swear we get so excited to see what everyone makes every month. This is such a super creative group!

As you can see with a couple of the above trays, they become very tarnished and pitted. Silver polish can only do so much cleaning. I decided to use one of the damaged trays and create a chalkboard.  I used Krylon black chalkboard paint.

  • For best results, paint one coat and let dry completely for 24 hours.
  • Paint another coat in the opposite direction and let dry for 24 hours.
  • If possible, wait a few days before curing process.
  • Using a new piece of chalk, lay it on the side and rub all over the painted surface for curing purposes.
  • Clean with a soft, lint free cloth.
  • Ready to use.

I used colored chalk to create a fall graphic.

The chalkboard paint is very durable.

This method works on glass and porcelain too.

  1. This is just great! I love the chalkboard idea!!

  2. I love your chalkboard silver tray. I have one, too- it was an old, large rectangular one with handles that had seen better days.
Now it hangs over my stove and I change out the phrase seasonally, or just when I see a quote I love. I usually tie a coordinating napkin in a handle.
One of my favorites for a ladies luncheon was ” Soup of the day: Cosmopolitans” with a cute drink drawn. It got a lot of laughs!
I even used it once for a menu at a party. Fun!

  3. I love doing this with trays. I have sold many trays like that as well. So fun

  7. I’ve got me a tray collection. On the mantel, in bins, and the very same one you have is a chalkboard wreath on my front door. Great minds think alike.

  8. What a fun and creative idea ladies! I can see this being used not only for fall but throughout the entire year. Can’t wait to try this out, hugs, CoCo
