Last year we planted our first garden and had so much fun doing it! We honestly didn’t know too much about what we were doing and just hoped for the best. To our pleasant surprise we actually did pretty well! We had tomatoes, squash, bell peppers and cucumbers…not everything worked out, but we honestly would have been happy with just one tomato. This year we’ve also decided to add watermelon, okra, and sweet potatoes.
We were excited to plant our Spring garden this year, but had to keep delaying it due to the cold weather and/or rain. This past weekend was finally the perfect weekend to get started. Now I will say that the garden almost didn’t get done…I ran into a snake as I was pulling weeds and snakes and I do not mix. But I was a trooper and got the job done 🙂
We went to Home Depot to get our plants…maybe one day we’ll start to use seeds, but for now plants will do.
We have 2 raised beds in our yard. One was here before we bought our house…
The other we got last year and it was great and really easy to assemble…
We also figured we did something right last year because our oregano came back 🙂
We cleaned out the beds as best we could, as there were leaves, pine straw, etc. that had fallen in winter. Then we got to work putting in the new soil and compost. We use 1 part soil to 1 part compost.
I like to lay out where all of the plants will go and make sure they have enough space.
I love the Bonnie Plants that most hardware stores have because their pots are biodegradable. All you have to do is soak the pot, tear off the bottom, and place it in the hole you’ve dug.
Here are the beds after everything was planted. Of course it was a windy day and when I went to take the pictures pine needles, flower buds, etc. had already gotten into the beds.
It’s hard work, but it is definitely an afternoon well spent! Now I get to make cute garden markers that I will be sharing with y’all. Hopefully our veggies and fruit turn out this year…you’ll have to come back in a couple of months to see 🙂
