Fall – that favorite time of year when the air is cool and fresh, the skies are bright blue and I can create fire!  I love a fire – in the fireplace, the fire pit or a fire ring.  My brothers and I are true pyromaniacs – we love to get a giant roaring fire going in an outdoor fire pit, and just sit around the pit and swap stories and memories and share the good times.

Today, I share with you how I make fragrant fire starters for your outdoor fire pit. I know that there are a lot of methods and recipes out there. This is one I created with what I had on hand to make it easier for myself – and I didn’t have to leave the house and go to the store.

I collected pine cones from my very own backyard.  Here are the steps I took:

  • Preheat oven to 170 degrees
  • Place pine cones on a foil-lined baking sheet
  • Sprinkle pine cones with cinnamon and cloves – or any seasonings that you like for fragrance.
  • Bake the pine cones for 1.5 hours – being careful to watch for possible burning.  The baking process serves to dry out and open your pine cones and will get rid of any pesky mites.
  • Remove pine cones from oven
  • Start a pot of water to create your double-broiler
  • Place candles in the top pot, being careful to not let any water into the top pot.
  • Melt down your candles well
  • Using tongs, dip and saturate pine cones in the melted mixture
  • Place pine cones on waxed paper to dry

DIY fragrant pine cone fire starters...I did not have wax on hand.  I used candles that I had in the closet from the Dollar Tree.

This is what my pine cones looked like after drying.  A little pink but I think they look and smell great!

I plan on making a lot of these as Christmas hostess gifts.
